Remodeling a Small Bathroom in a Log Home Part 9: Preparing the Floor

Hardi-Board backerIt was now time to prepare the floor not only for the tile, for which I still search, but so that I can place the superstructure for the copper tub which was built in the last installment.

Laying the floor was actually quite simple. Long ago I had removed the ugly pink tile left over from the previous owner that was still in the existing bath. Pink tile in a log home?

Laying the floor under-laymentUnderneath the pink tile was metal lath over a disgusting vinyl floor which was glued down to the sub-floor with mastic. In the new section I removed a layer of thin plywood to reveal an old pine floor underneath. I would have left the old pine floor however it had been riddled with holes from previous plumbing jobs when the room had been used as a men’s room for the lodge’s tavern days. I also would be tiling the existing bath and wanted the tile to extend into the new bath area.

The new hand-made copper tub would be built-in in the new section against the wall. The tile would go up to the bottom edge of the tub.

Cutting the hardi-board and fitting it into place went quickly. I marked off the areas where plumbing would come up through the floor and made the appropriate cuts. I fill the joints and move on to prepping the walls for this small bathroom remodeling project.
