I had been given this little refrigerator magnet of a twig deer head and thought it would look good life-sized and figured it would serve well as a rather whimsical way to greet guests to the lodge.
The charming but goofy looking little deer was of simple twig construction.
I had recently taken down a dead black locust on the property and using my chainsaw made quick work of cutting the pieces.
Slices of smaller logs created the eyes and the nose. Slicing of the small logs on a diagonal gave me the ears. A couple of cuts of small branches provided the pupils.
The head was cut from a 2′ x 15″ log. I cut a wedge in the head for the mouth and then took the wedge and trimmed it down and painted it white for the teeth.
The head was then mounted with a large 3″ wood dowel cut from one of the branches to the 3′ long neck.
I drilled a couple of holes in the head and using some of the untrimmed branches created some goofy antlers.
The entire deer head was mounted on a 2″x10″ piece of scrap and mounted on the gable looking down the front path so as to greet visitors as they approach.
During the winter months I decorate his antlers with ornaments that I make of suet, birdseed and twine.

How crafty – you should really get into scrap booking
I’m sure Home Interiors will be knocking on your door to get some of these for their fall line.
Seriously though – Love the idea of your holiday decorations that are bird friendly. Very Eco Smart.
