Dear Beverly,
I hope that all is well.
The snows have been steady this year. Just when patches of bare ground appear another snowfall blankets the area.
I came across this old photo of Cindy, Pam, Michelle and I with the sheep – Tiffany and Belle, and Audie the Lab. I actually remember the photo being taken. We only had Audie for a short time. I remember Dad had wanted a hunting dog and getting the Lab. It used to chase me around and one time dragged me around down near the chicken coop by by hood. I remember, being down feeding the chickens and coming out of the coop and seeing Audie up by the house. She came running down full speed tackled me and dragged me around through the snow by my hood– she was only playing but it scared the hell out of me.
Dad use to have to tie Audie up when she was outside as she would get the whiff a deer or some other animal and take off and he would have to go out searching for her. I also remember — Dad dropping his car keys and before he could bend down to grab them Audie snatched them up, tossed them in the air, caught them and gulped them down.
I don’t really remember much more than that other than he was both furious and laughing about it at the same time. I don’t remember what ever happened to her.
Anyway — looking at the photo – I think this was the year that one of the sheep fell through the ice one morning. There was always an open patch of water near the barn right above the spring in the lake – the sheep had walked out to the edge of the open water and one of them fell through the ice. I remember Pam saw it happen from the house. She screamed and ran down in her pajamas and robe through the snow out onto the ice and somehow she grabbed it, picked it up and hauled it up on the ice. Pure adrenaline. A full grown Ewe.
Who knows but its probably the same one she is holding in the photo.
I’ll have to ask her about it. I remember we had brought the ewe in the family room with heat lamps drying it off and trying to get her warm and to keep an eye on her.
Funny the things remembered when looking at old photos. – As if it was yesterday.
Well I’m off and running… Talk to you soon.
