I began attacking the second basement. It was one of those areas that got out of control. Well I’m taking control back. — l’ll use a portion of the room and put in a workshop of sorts.
Its a room of mostly log and stone walls 16′ by 57′. For years it has been general storage – mostly junk – not even stuff that I could put on Ebay. I did however save the wood. I’ll put that to good use.
The floor in the far section is part dirt with rock that protrudes the surface. This place was built on a rock. I cannot remove the stone without blasting so it will remain. I chalk it up to adding character. But I don’t want the area to go to waste. so I have fleshed out a simple design for a workshop – a “fix-it” area. The main section of the second basement has a fine concrete floor.
I have been chinking the inside logs where the chinking had been compromised over the years. Once the chinking has cured Ill give a final skim coat to all the chinking so that it is uniform in appearance. I’ll use the chinking recipe discussed in an earlier post and paint on the final mortar surface.
I’ll use the most of the wood to create some work surfaces, benches, and tool storage. I’ll insulate the ceiling and hang sheet rock or bead board with some good lighting.
The other section with its solid concrete floors will be the new home of my workbenches which are currently crammed into a small area in the main basement.
This will give me a good amount of space and Ill have a better place to put my tools and supplies.
With the weather turning cold — I have to finish up some tasks on the outside. Its been raining so much lately that I have
not been able to finish fixing a log on the outside as I have been trying to dry it out.
