Fixing windows has never been a chore that I look forward to. The windows throughout the house are made of Ash — why you may ask? Who knows.
The old windows off the back porch needed a lot of attention. My task was originally to repaint the frames. But I have found in my efforts back a couple of years ago that the windows all needed reglazing. I decided to put off the project for a spell. Not only did they need to be reglazed but some would need to be rebuilt and most if not all the glass would have to be replaced.
The old glass was etched on the outside — so cleaning so that you could see clearly through them was impossible. The previous owner that let this whole place go to hell had simply put on layer after layer of bathtub caulk from the inside.
The actual glazing was falling off in my hands – very little scraping with the putty knife needed to be done.
I began picking out the old glazing and cleaning the windows. I replaced all of the glass. A lot of panes of glass had been cut, replaced and glazed.
There are three different kinds of windows on the porch. Double hung – 8 of those, and 18 casement. The double hungs are arranged two over three lights and the casements are three over four. Then there is one large picture window. — Ill deal with that at a later date.
Once I got into mode- which admittedly took a while – replacing the glass and glazing was not a problem and actually went quite quickly. The old Ash has held up well over the years. I do have a couple of windows on the lower level of the porch which I have taken to a craftsman friend to rebuild as it was a little out of my expertise. Although he promised me that he would show me how to duplicate the windows. — teaching me some new woodworking skills.
I will post photos of the finshed results shortly. But for now its back to fixing windows.
I will repaint the windows back to their original color which was actually a deep forest green. — The red had been sloppily painted on about 10 years ago. I must admit — I do like the red though. Im trying to remain true to the original intent.
Once my buddy has shown me how to duplicate the windows I hope to begin to build new true divided light windows for the rest of the house where needed. I don’t know if Ill be able to pull that off though.
