Filson: Might as well have the best

I cannot say enough good things about this company.

Years ago, after my grandfather passed away, I was given his field coat: a rugged, well worn and tough canvas coat beautifully soiled with the scars and scuffs that could fill volumes of books with the stories that graced a lifetime of his adventures. Today I wear his coat on my own adventures.

He bought that coat in about 1938 according to my grandmother and its as tough and solid today as it was new. It has never been washed, but only brushed off of the days events with a stiff bristle.

Amazed at this coat I sought out the company from which it came:

They still make the same coat.

Since discovering Filson back in the mid 80s I have made an annual trek to their flagship store in Seattle, Washington.

I have over the years acquired most of their luggage, shirts pants, fly fishing gear, hunting gear, vests, coats and of course the most amazing field satchel. Filson Field Satchel

After over 15 years of heavy business travel on a weekly basis my field satchel looks even better. Its rich patina is admired my many a traveler. So many people have asked me about it over the years as well as about my rugged Pullman bag Filson Pullman bags. Filson Large Pullman Bag

My Filson luggage has outlived by years any other piece of luggage on which I had spent a small fortune. None compare to the durability of Filson.

On a recent trip to the mountains near Seattle I stopped off at Filson and picked up a few pairs of pants, a few shirts, a new pair of Highlander boots (now my sixth pair), a new belt, a pair of suspenders, and ordered a custom Filson Duster. John and Dave helped me with everything and even kicked in a pair of khakis themselves (thank you guys! an absolute pleasure!). Customer service is absolutely unparalleled.

A note on the Highlander boots: this is now my sixth pair. Don’t get me wrong. I still have the first pair – now over 26 years old and still going strong. The oldest pair feel like slippers — I use them in the garden mostly but they still hold up to hiking in the mountains here. The newest pair I have reserved for when I want to look crisp. I wear all the others as well depending on purpose as each had a degree of wear but by no means are any of them anywhere near worn out. This is quality stuff folks. I encourage you to check them out.

If at first you feel the cost of things are on the pricey side consider this: typical briefcases and luggage could set you back starting around $150.00. I put mine through hell and I would end up going through at least two briefcases and three of those wheelie luggage crap things each year. It adds up to quite a bit. Then I invested in a Filson bag and satchel and have put them through the same abuse if not more. I have had them each for almost 20 years and people still stop me and ask me what they are and comment as to how beautiful they are. Remember, you get what you pay for.

As Filson says: You might as well have the best.

Today I was at Filson in Seattle. I am saddened at the sight of foreign made goods on the shelves, and with obvious differences in the quality. For shame.
